Back at Work
I'm back at work again this week. I missed seven days due to illness. I wish I could say I'm all better now, but I'm not quite over it... whatever "it" is. I never really got a specific diagnosis. Last week I had chest x-rays and even a blood test. It's not pneumonia, and probably not pertussis. They're doing tests just to rule that out in the interest of "public health". I've been on antibiotics for more than a week, so I'm not contagious if I was infected.

My chest started to really hurt last week. The doc says a month of coughing has inflamed the cartilege that holds my ribs together. But it hurts all the time, especially when I cough. The cough is starting to get better, but my chest aches as much as ever.

But enough complaining. I ordered a new toy yesterday! I've decided it's about time to do some computer upgrades. I believe my machine is haunted. By demons, most likely. About two years ago I started getting intermittent lock-ups, usually when running 3D-accellerated applications (y'know, games). I replaced part after part trying to solve the problem. I'm sure that I've replaced every part in the computer at this point, right down to the power supply. I even installed a water cooling rig. Yet it still locks up the same way. So we're going to do a big overhaul. New motherboard, new processor, new memory, new video card and new power supply.

I started by choosing a video card. I settled on the BFG GeForce 7800 GTX OC. It's PCI Express, has 256 MB GDDR3 and runs overclocked right out of the box. It's hot. And it's SLI ready. SLI is a neat technology. You can basically double your video processing power by running two cards in parallel. My plan is to get a fancy SLI-ready motherboard now, and then double up on the video cards when the 7800s gets cheaper. Brilliant, eh? I thought so.

Next I need to find the right motherboard. This one, perhaps? I may need to get some expert advice before moving forward. I'm going to be busy backing up gigs and gigs of data in the meantime, anyway. I'm plan to reformat my hard drive and reinstall everything once the upgrades are done, giving the evil spirits no place to hide. When it's all done I'm gonna have a nice, shiny clean machine... and almost enough parts left over to cobble together another box. Why do we need a fifth computer? Obviously to give the evil demons a new place to haunt. I really don't want them in my machine anymore.

Current Mood: determined

The symptoms you described are a lot like the ones I had when I had pleurisy. It would hurt so bad in my one side when I would cough, like this sharp pain would shoot through my side and chest. I was diagnosed through x-ray though so Im thinking if this is what you had it would have shown up in your xray, but the symptoms really does sound like pleurisy.

Naw, they were looking for that on the x-ray. It's just a painful inflammation in the chest wall. They didn't even give me any drugs for it.

Pleurisy is a painful bitch. I had that a few years ago. I never want that again. I thought J might have that too, but his lungs were all clear on the x-ray.
