Monday Movie Reviews
It's Monday. And here I am at work again. The weekend had its ups and downs. On Saturday I got talked into going to Arenacross at Arco. This is where they have indoor dirtbike races on a fairly elaborate track with twisty turns and hills and jumps. If you know me, you probably wouldn't expect to find me at that sort of event. But I have to admit, it was a lot of fun! While you have to admire the skills of the professionals, the chaos of the amateur events was even more thrilling. They put 15 or 16 bikes on this tiny track, and they're flying about in all directions like some sort of crazy ballet. There weren't any specatular wrecks, but plenty of painful looking dismounts. Why is it so much fun to watch people get hurt? Should we feel bad about that? I don't. I figure that's what most people are paying to see.

Last night Danielle and I watched Grizzly Man on Discovery Channel. If you hadn't heard of it, it's a fascinating documentary about a guy named Timothy Treadwell who would go to an Alaskan nature preserve and live among grizzly bears for months at a time. Then one day the bears say, "enough of this shit," and eat him (and his girlfriend). He left behind hundreds of hours of video footage of himself living as a crusader against forces of evil that may or may not even exist. It's much better than I can describe. It's not really a nature movie about bears. It's a movie that explores what it means to be human. Or something like that.

Oh, and we rented another great movie: Lord of War. It's just a really great movie, and like Grizzly Man, it gives you a lot to think about. I don't know why no one saw this movie when it came out. It's, um... great. Rent it.

I know arenacross was not your cup of tea and that you were not looking forward to it, but I'm so glad you went with me and even had fun. You were a great sport and I really appreciate it.

I don't know what to say about Grizzly Man. Timothy Treadwell was a strange man, but I respect what he thought he was trying to do and his love for the bears.

Lord or War...fantastic and thought provoking. I'm so glad you chose this one, it's not one I would have chosen to see otherwise.
