Video Games Live
Last Friday Danielle and I went to see Video Games Live in San Jose. It was basically a show where they set up an orchestra and chior to perform nothing but music from video games. It was really fun. They played music from Super Mario Brothers, Zelda, TRON, Ghosts 'n' Goblins... all my favorites. Behind the orchestra was a giant screen that showed scenes from the games.

The concert was right across the street from the GDC -- the Game Developers Conference. I had been reading the news out of the GDC all week, but I had no idea that the concert was happening in the same place. So the audience was filled with a who's-who of players in the video game industry. After many of the pieces, the conductor introduced the composer who happened to be in the audience with us.

Here's a very thorough review of the show that breaks it down in more detail than I could.

GDC is also for other types of games other than video. Some big movers in the RPG community attend GDC.

Yeah, but there's probably not a lot of music composition in the tabletop gaming biz.

No, but that would be simultaneously both awesome and sad.
