Yesterday I asked Ryan if he wanted to join me for a Posey’s run.  While I enjoy Ryan’s company during the short walk to the convenience store and back, I had an additional motive.  Because I wasn’t carrying cash, I figured I would use my check card to buy a lemonade and a Hostess apple pie, plus whatever Ryan wanted.  You see, my snack alone wouldn’t have satisfied the five-dollar minimum requirement for debit purchases.

A problem arose.  Ryan had just returned from Posey’s, and he didn’t need any snacks.  He just wanted to get out of the office.  Being the awesome guy he is, he offered to lend me cash.

The lemonade, pie and sales tax came to $2.89.  Ryan opened his wallet to find naught but two singles.  I was just about to add $2.11 worth of Slim Jims to my order, but figured I ought to check all my pockets for hidden monies.  I pulled all the coins from my bluejeans to reveal exactly two quarters, three dimes, a nickel and four pennies.  Providence.

I left the store feeling satisfied that occasionally things work out well for me.  And for perhaps the first time in my life, I used the phrase “I’m blogging this.”  So I did.

And now for an unrelated anecdote.

Danielle made the most awesome sandwiches for dinner last night.  She whipped up some tiny meatloaves that were baked in mini-muffin tins, and served them on rolls with mayo and provolone.  It sounds like a typical meatball sub on paper, but I promise you it was so much more.  Maybe it was the bakery-fresh bread or the deli-sliced cheese or the tangy red sauce the mini-loaves simmered in.  Whatever it was, the taste was like coming face-to-face with sandwich Jesus.  (Mmmmmmm, sarelicious.)

I’m very much looking forward to tonight’s leftovers.

This is an ad lib piano solo of a bunch of Jonathan Coulton songs.

I’d never heard of this guy until about a year ago. I only discovered this music after playing Portal for the first time. JoCo (as we fans call him) wrote the song that plays during the end credits. I was instantly hooked. I embarked on a mission to seek out and discover all things Coulton, and his complete repertoire has graced my iPod ever since. We have tickets to see Mr. Coulton in San Francisco this January, and I’m beyond geeked about seeing him perform live.

In honor of the occasion, I recorded this overly-long video of me noodling around on the keyboard, playing just a handful of my favorite JoCo tunes. This medley could have easily gone on for hours, but here are the very special tracks that made the cut (in the order they appear):

Still Alive (Intro), Future Soon, Todd the T1000, Mr. Fancy Pants, Skullcrusher Mountain, De-Evolving, Tom Cruise Crazy, Code Monkey, Mandelbrot Set, Chiron Beta Prime (Solo), Re: Your Brains, Over There, Creepy Doll, Still Alive (Reprise)

And if you don’t know JoCo, please listen to and/or purchase some of his tracks. My clumsy fingering hardly does the originals justice. However, fans of my clumsy fingering (hi, Dad) can download the mp3 of this medley by right-clicking here and choosing “Save As…”.

Here’s the MIDI data from this performance.

First Post!

According to Technorati Media, 175,000 new blogs are created every single day. Today, November 23rd, 2008, I’m adding my own voice to the vast chorus of unwashed masses crowding the ever-expanding blogscape.

What should one expect to find on SpaceParanoids.net? Well, we’re going to have to find out together. I’m going to make an effort to create some interesting content. You’ll certainly find some original music and plenty of photographs. You’ll probably find some artsy stuff now and then. I may craft a Photoshop tutorial or two. I’m sure I’ll be tempted to share my opinions on politics, religion, popular culture and bacon, as well as my personal experiences as the proud father of a precocious toddler named Ethan, a 25-pound bundle of pure energy around whom my world currently revolves.

Will my humble blog stand out among the other 174,999 blogs launching today? I doubt it. But if you’re reading this, something has brought you to my corner of the intarwebs, and I welcome you sincerely. I encourage you to make comments and offer any kind of feedback. As long as it’s positive. Critical comments (constructive or otherwise) will be gleefully deleted.

Do you know what the hardest part about blogging is? Finding an interesting way to end your post.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DANIELLE!

Love, Ethan & Jarrett :)

I finally got Danielle to go to bed without taking Ethan along. She doesn't let me get up at night for Ethan. She wants me to rest so I can work. But she's doing more work every day than I am. I don't want to see her get frazzled. She needs her rest more than I do.

So tonight I've decided to keep Ethan upstairs with me all night, and I'll sleep as much as I can on the couch. It's hard for me to get to sleep between feedings and changings, but that just means I'll get that much more quality father/son time :)

With any luck, Danielle will sleep through the night, wake up refreshed, and she'll get to enjoy a happy day with our boy.

I love being a dad!

1. Purchase this item.

2. Photograph male child wearing item.

3. Wait fifteen years.

4. Threaten to upload photographs to child's MySpace profile if he doesn't stay in line.

Hmmm... could be a worthwhile investment.

Danielle and Ethan are getting discharged today! I'm so looking forward to having my family at home where they belong. Although I fear I'll miss the round-the-clock nursing care and babysitting services, it's a welcome trade-off.

Danielle has been recovering from surgery a lot faster than I would have expected. Yesterday she was on her feet and moving around quite a bit, and she even managed to take a shower on her own. She still has a lot of mending to do, but she's making very fast progress.

Ethan has been doing just great. He's just a happy, healthy, beautiful little boy. I'm so looking forward to introducing him to our friends and family.

And finally, here are some more photos of Ethan.

Current Mood: happy happy

We've made a lot of progress, but there's a lot more pushing to do.

It might be another hour.

Danielle is still pushing.

At 9:30 pm the nurse is going to check her progress.

Time to push again.

Oh, I guess we still have a little ways to go. They're giving Danielle a break from pushing for an hour or so to see if the baby will come down a bit on his own.

We're a "good 9 cm" now. Things are moving forward... But very slowly.

No one is talking about surgery yet. I'm not sure how long they'll let us wait before they do.

Danielle is having her epidural adjusted because it was only numbing her right side.

We've officially been at it for twenty four hours.

No pushing yet. That one last little bit of cervix is being really stubborn. Ethan is ready. Danielle is definitely ready to start pushing.

The nurse is going to check her again at six.

It's almost time for the pushing. One side of the cervix is not contracted as much as it should be, but it should open up.

The baby is doing great and has turned to a good position for delivery.

Almost there!

It's almost 2:30 pm. Things are moving a little faster. Danielle is in a lot of pain but there's not much the doctors can do to help.

We've made it to 8 cm, 90% effaced, and the baby has moved down to station zero.

Hopefully it won't be too much longer.

It's almost 2 pm. Danielle has made some great progress, so they are going to let labor continue for a couple more hours.

She's at 6 cm and finally in active labor. A vaginal delivery is more likely than we'd thought!
