Anyone ever heard of a movie called The Cat's Meow? I hadn't, until we saw a trailer for it last night. It seems to be a comedy about the Hearst yacht scandal. Legend has it that William Randolf Hearst murdered producer-director Thomas Ince during a yacht outing, but used his power and influce to keep it a secret, despite dozens of witnesses. If you've seen RKO 281 you might remember Herman Mankeiwicz telling this story to Orson Welles as he tried to talk him out of making Citizen Cane, which is loosely based on the lives of W. R. Hearst and Marion Davies.
Snopes has an interesting article about the Hearst murder legend.
The Cat's Meow has some excellent casting. Edward Herrmann as Hearst, Kirsten Dunst as Marion Davies, Cary Elwes as Thomas Ince, and my favorite transvestite comedian, Eddie Izzard as Charlie Chaplin, who happened to be on the yacht, too.
