I'm sure everyone has been really concerned about my sick computer. Well, I have some great news. I got her all fixed up. Last week I cowboyed up and bought a different motherboard, and I swapped it out myself (thankyouverymuch).
See, when I bought the parts for my last big upgrade, Fry's didn't have any Intel motherboards that met my current needs. So I got a Gigabyte Technology motherboard with an Intel 875P chipset. It was a big mistake. The choice seemed okay for the most part, but the ATI Radeon didn't care much for the AGP bus, leading me to think the video card was defective. Making it even harder to diagnose, I didn't have any other AGP cards handy for swapping and testing. So I took a shot in the dark and bough a brand new motherboard — and this time I found the Intel board I was looking for.
So, the computer hasn't crashed since. Not even once. The bad news is it's far too late to return the old board, so I'm out a couple hundred bucks. But it's a write-off. So, eh.
I also threw in another 512 Mb of RAM for the heck of it. Now I have a full Gig on two channels. My computer is done now. No more buying parts for a long, long time.
So, now that the sick computer saga is over, I don't have a lot to complain about. Everything has been going really, really well lately! Danielle seems much happier than she ought to be (stuck with me and all). And I'm happy that she's so happy. And that in turn makes for a very happy couple. And the dog is happy that we're all so happy all the time.
The only thing I could really gripe about is that I've spent so much money on computer crap in the last couple months that I don't have a lot of cash to throw around for awhile. Which is sad, because I like to buy things. I guess instead of shopping all the time, I'll have to just stay home and enjoy my happy girlfriend and my healthy computers.
You know I've been playing more Star Wars: Galaxies when I have the time. But as if that weren't enough Star Wars in my life, I also picked up Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic for the ol' Xbox console (SW:KOTOR as the kids call it). The game is pretty neat! You get to decide weather you want to be good Jedi or Dark Jedi, and it shapes the outcome of the game. I'm being a good boy, although it has been all too tempting to slay characters when they talk back to me in game. I think my brain is secretly aligned with dark forces.
I also bought Danielle a nice chair for the kitchen computer and The Sims: Unleashed. The expansion packed unleashed a handful of bugs and glitches that we weren't prepared for, and it's been frustrating my poor girl. I tried to patch the game, but it didn't do a lot of good. Now we're also stuck with the double relationship meter that they added with the Hot Date expansion pack, which I didn't expect it to do — which I didn't want it to do. It makes the game much harder and less fun. I got fed up with the "short term / long term" metrics pretty fast, but we'll have to see how well Danielle puts up with it.
That's all for now. I need some lunch!
