So when I moved to Stockton, California five years ago I was still telecommuting to my old job in Delaware for a few months. But I didn't really know anyone out here, and I didn't have a whole lot of work to do, so I started to play around with Caligari trueSpace3, a midrange 3D modelling and rendering tool. I really didn't know anything about the software, but I had an old beat up copy of the trueSpace2 Bible that someone had given me. In my free time I read through each chapter and started modelling the objects around me by taking measurements of my home office workstation.

As you can see, for a first effort it turned out pretty well. I submitted it to Caligari's montly gallery contest, and they gave me the top prize. They sent me a full licensed copy of trueSpace4 before it had even hit the store shelves, which was handy because I could never afford it on my own (I was using a pirated copy of trueSpace3 at the time). After that my office image would pop up in their print advertisements now and then, it was featured in the first issue of trueSpace magazine, and also shows up in the book Inside trueSpace4.

The next month I got a job at SacWeb, and I didn't really have time to do any more 3D modelling. Once in awhile I'd find an excuse to do a little 3D for a website illustration (like the Hansen cityscape model), but never anything on the scale of the original office image I did five years ago.

Anyway, I got this email today:

A long long time ago I was running around on the internet and came across some 3D pictures. They were really neat. Flipping through all the pages of images I came across your office picture you made in TrueSpace (in 1998(?)). Because of that picture I got into 3D, learning Maya, Softimage, 3D Studio Max, Renderman, etc. It's inspired me all this way and even tho im not really into 3D anymore (wish i was, not sure why im not :() I want to thank you for that picture. It motivated me to take 3D head on through self teaching. I've done lots of open/freesoftware work as an interface developer and when asked where did I first start, I bring up the story about your office picture and "Jarretts World" website.

Thank you.

Benjamin P. Keating

So, yeah, that's pretty cool.

I think it's about time I thought about doing some more 3D artwork.

Current Mood: speechless

Wow honey...that's really cool. Your work inspired someone else, how many people can say that? Well, probably lots of people, but no one else I know.

It's framed on the wall behind the fireplace. The pic is no big deal...he can't change it everytime he changes girlfriends. By the time he fixes it...he'll be on to the next one anyway. Hehehe :)

Stockton? Yuck.
I was raised there (not born though although the town I was born in is pretty close). hehe

Awesome desk picture, awesome 3D picture.
Wish I could do something like that.
I'm not very creative. :(
