I've heard about their "forced" upgrades that were coming up--has to do with DRM in many ways. The new receivers are supposed to lead the way to where they can control how you record shows, etc. (e.g. an HBO movie might be marked as "protected--do not record", so the receivers will do like DVD players try to make it difficult to record via VCR, PVR, etc.)

No, put away the tin foil hat... for now.

Some time after Dish Network started doing HD, they switched to eight-level phase shift keying modulation on their newer channels, which uses 35% less bandwidth.

Decoding 8PSK would not be possible without a hardware upgrade, and the receivers have a slot in the back for just such an occasion.

I never bothered to do the upgrade before because I've been waiting to get their Tivo-like HD receiver. It was supposed to come last year. But I'll probably need to wait at least another month before I get one of those puppies.

At any rate, it will be easier to sell my 6000 on eBay if it's got the 8PSK installed.

I never realized "eight-level phase shift keying modulation" sounded so cool.

"Why, yes, my receiver is equipped for eight-level phase shift keying modulation."
