Atkins Anyone?
On the way to the show last night Brian and Heather were telling me they started the Atkins diet. Since Sunday Brian has lost 12 lbs. Not too shabby.

Is anyone else out there doing this?

Steak. It's what's for breakfast.

That sort of rapid weight loss is very unhealthy. At that rate, you don't lose fat, but you do lose water. For long-term weight loss, the recommended rate is 1-2 pounds a week.. Otherwise you'll gain it all back. :)

That's really, really bad.

Atkins isn't safe either, but no one cares.

Weight loss like that is extremely unsafe and dangerous. Also, the lost weight is usually all gained back if not not more, eventually.

Maybe I'll try it and log the results in my journal. Then if I die everyone will say, "I guess it's not that safe after all."

You won't die, but you'll lose muscle mass (and bone density, too, if memory serves) and not the fat you want to lose..

And the Atkins Diet causes heart damage, but again, probably nothing that'll cause you to keel over. At least, not right away. :)

Oh, and the Atkins diet doesn't work. It's a temporary thing, not a lifestyle change. Eat more healthy foods, and incorporate one hour exercise into your day, EVERYDAY. Walking is best for you two right now. ~jlu

Yeah, but I don't like veggies and low fat foods. It'd rather give up carbs than fat.

I'm not saying I'm going to do anything, really. Since getting together with Julie I've gone from 215 to 180... well, then back up to 185. Bbut hey, nothing to complain about.

There is actually no point in eating some vegetables. Like lettuce, celery, yuck! But the "meatier" vegetables are quite good, and quite convenient. For instance, frozen vegetables are so convenient, just stick it in the microwave! Squash, white corn, peas with little onions, very tasty if microwaved just right. In the case of those bags of frozen peas, you don't even have to cook them, just a quick cold water rinse, let them defrost a bit, and it's delicious. Frozen has more vitamins than "fresh" from the produce section you know. Eggplant, cauliflower, broccoli, kohlrabi, celery root, have excellent flavor, and excellent FILLING power. A ratio of three quarters vegetables, to one quarter carb and protein is a good healthy mix. Like I said, that's some good eatin don't you think? You can still have pizza and chinese food, just one fourth of your usual portion. Julie needs two thousand calories a day to lose weight. A fourth of a usual portion of "bad" food is about 300 calories. vegetables have negligible calories so we won't count them. Corn, apples, potato, have a hundred calories though so you have to count them. So all in all, Three squares at about 350 calories leaves about a thousand calories to play with in a day, to have a candy bar, extra slice of pizza, fruit, milk etc. Save a bit of calorie allowance for drinks and chicken wings on the weekend. ~jlu
